(Kyodo) Misaki Yamaguchi captured the title in the women's 100-meter freestyle on Saturday with a new Japanese record at the National Sports Festival in Niigata. The 19-year-old Yamaguchi clocked a time of 54.43 seconds. The previous record was held by Haruka Ueda, who timed 54.88 at this summer's world championships in Rome. In other action, Ryosuke Irie won the men's 100 backstroke in a meet-record 52.37, 0.13 slower than his national record pace.

Ryosuke Irie set a new men's 100-meter backstroke Japanese record on the third day of the national collegiate championships Saturday. The 200-backstroke world silver medalist clocked 52.24 seconds in the first leg of the 400 medley relay at Kumamoto Municipal Indoor Pool, shaving .02 second off the previous national mark Junya Koga set in winning the gold medal at the world championships in Rome in July. © 2009 Kyodo News. KUMAMOTO (Kyodo) Satomi Suzuki set a national record of 1 minute, 6.32 seconds in the women's 100-meter breaststroke final on the second day of the National Collegiate Swimming Championships Friday. Suzuki, a Yamanashi Gakuin University freshman, broke Mina Matsushima's record set earlier in the day by 0.91 seconds at Kumamoto Municipal Indoor Pool. In the preliminaries, Matsushima, a Nihon University freshman, broke the oldest Japanese swimming record held by Masami Tanaka, who swam the 100 breaststro
